How to prepare matcha

Matcha is not just a drink, but also an art form that embodies traditional Japanese culture. With the right utensils and techniques, you can enjoy an authentic matcha experience at home. This page explains in detail how to prepare a delicious matcha.

Section 1: Necessary utensils

We have simplified the equipment so that you can easily prepare matcha at home. You only need these 3 essentials:

  • Chasen: specially designed bamboo whisk
  • Chawan: matcha bowl
  • Chashaku: bamboo scoop for measuring matcha

We also recommend using a sieve. High-quality matchas tend to form clumps of powder. A sieve will help you achieve a smoother texture.

TIPS:
You can replace the chasen with a modern mini electric mixer. These mixers are available in home appliance or decor stores (you can even find them at IKEA!).

Section 2: How to prepare matcha

1. Preparation :

  • Boil water
  • Warm the chasen to soften it

2. Put the matcha in the bowl :

  • Pour 2g to 4g of matcha. One chashaku scoop contains approximately 1g
  • If you have a sieve, use it to obtain a smoother texture
  • 2g is enough for regular matcha, but you can use up to 4g for a matcha latte depending on the desired strength

3. Whisk the matcha :

  • When the water prepared in step 1 reaches 75-85°C, you can begin preparing the matcha
  • Pour a small amount of hot water over the matcha (60ml-80ml)
  • Whisk well with the chasen until there are no more lumps
  • Add the rest of the water and move the chasen quickly in "M" or "W" motions
  • At the end, move the chasen closer to the surface to create foam

4. Finalization :

  • When the surface is covered with a fine, uniform foam, it is ready
  • Rotate the bowl to face forward and enjoy

Section 3: Advanced techniques

Tips for preparing delicious matcha:

  • Temperature control: high-quality matcha tastes better with cooler water (around 70°C)
  • Chasen movement: use your wrist flexibly and move the whisk quickly without forcing
  • Foam quality: a fine and uniform foam makes the texture creamier
  • Bowl choice: selecting a bowl suitable for the season adds an aesthetic dimension to the experience
